THE PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Fall 2009
Welcome board members, friends, clubbies, and associates,
To begin, I would like to present to you many new members of our club, Chelsea Abel Marsh, Mark T. McGraw, Eric Kaltz, Matt Mahony, and Pat McMahon. They have proven to be indispensable to the club and have eagerly embraced the student cooperative lifestyle with open arms. Also, they provide a flavor of humor not yet experienced by the club and I must say, it’s a tasty one.
The Goodrich Club has experienced an enlightenment that hasn’t been seen in years. I can recall the run-down state of the house when Charlie, Shawn, and I moved in fall of last year. To put things into perspective, two rooms were vacant, one of which was simply a breaking glass room, and the basement was inhospitable. The house’s appearance was sloppy and dirty, and not what I expect of an intellectual organization. Most of our funds had been poured away into a house booze fund, and we entered the club with no financial backing. Through cooperation, teamwork, and a little old fashion elbow grease the club is looking better then ever. Every clubbie in this room has dedicated a considerable amount to time to the house and increased the likelihood of its continuation and encapsulation in the Albion history books.
I quote James B Works, President of the club in ‘83 and ’84:
“There are two paths to follow through life. One path is the path of least resistance, which will guarantee survival. The other is the more difficult path that will guarantee survival and also provide a well founded sense of accomplishment and satisfaction.”
As a member of the club, I feel a can confidently say that we, as a house, chose the latter path.
Socially, the Goodrich Club is in excellent standing with the community as well as the school. Sally Walker had assured us back in fall of ’08 the club was on the verge of being dismantled, and we were its last chance. Recently, I’ve heard from several faculty a renewed interest in the club as well as a barrage of compliments. I have heard similar from the neighbors. The club has experienced an increased interest with our alumni as well. I was able to commandeer an alumni list through the school, and we now have contact information for over 200 alums. The Goodrich Club has sweet new T-shirts as well! We had a totally bombdiggity 80s party that was a huge success and brought many fresh new faces to the club.
Recently, the Dean rivalry was reestablished much to the houses delight as well. Look for a small GC insignia in the fresh concrete outside of Dean’s sidewalk, compliments of Eric Kaltz and a recently pilfered vase on the mantel, compliments of Shawn Anderson. More shenanigans to come!
I feel house cohesiveness and conscientiousness is at an all time high. Club members have been more than willing to help each other out. With this ambition, we’ve conducted many large-scale house projects under the skillful watch of Shawn Anderson. Our newest chore chart has streamlined tasks, and has kept the house looking spick and span. All the Officers have done a superb job at making the house run as smoothly as possible- hats off to you! I can only see the continued improvement and house love in our future. Long live the GC!
Sincerely,
Justin S. Rivard
